In engineering, safe means freedom from unacceptable risk.
The field of safety is broad-based because it encompasses any situation where people may be exposed to risks. The field of safety identifies those risks and determines what should be done about them. Risk is composed of two elements: the severity of the hazard and the frequency of exposure.
Our role in the safety field typically occurs after freedom from unacceptable risk has been violated – sometimes from the person’s own doing or from decisions made by other people. At times, our role is to determine if more than one entity was involved in the decision making.
